Greenmarket was founded in 1976 with a two-fold mission: to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer, and to promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly to NYC consumers. With over 50 markets serving all five boroughs, the Greenmarket provides New Yorkers the opportunity to shake the hand of the person who grows their food, closing the distance between producer and customer.
I started selling at the Borough Hall, Brooklyn Greenmarket in October 2001. The many of customers and fellow farmers I met that first season were great influences on me and remain friends and inspirations to this day. Among them is Chef Mary Cleaver who was one of my first customers and remains a supportive customer and friend. The effect she has had on Flying Pigs Farm and me personally cannot be understated.
